House with a clock in its walls.

In 1955, ten-year-old Lewis Barnavelt goes to New Zebedee, Michigan to live with his uncle Jonathan in a creaky old house which has a mysterious ticking heart. Recently orphaned, Lewis only wants a normal childhood but soon discovers he is in line for anything but that. Uncle Jonathan is a well-intentioned warlock and his next-door neighbor and good friend, Florence Zimmerman, was once a far more powerful good witch. Jonathan’s house was previously owned by Isaac and Selena Izard. Before dying, this sinister couple had constructed a powerful clock that is hidden somewhere within the house’s walls, ticking eternally to pull the world into a magical alignment that would permit Isaac to cause the end of the world. When Lewis, wanting only to befriend and impress his popular classmate, Tarby Corrigan, attempts to raise a dead person in the local cemetery on Halloween, he accidentally releases the evil warlock, Isaac Izard, from his tomb. Things quickly go awry as Izard moves to recover the key and set the clock in motion to end the world. Now, Lewis, Jonathan, and Mrs. Zimmerman must summon all their courage to defeat Izard.

My Thoughts:

I was excited to see this movie, like most people I’m a huge fan of Jack Black and I wanted to see this movie. Sadly, the trailer was very misleading and it wasn’t as good as I thought it was. If you watch the trailer, it shows a lot of action and it brings you to watch the movie. I didn’t get that same feeling when I finally got to watch it. It started out slow, to the point where I wanted to fall asleep. There really wasn’t that much action as the trailer lead you to believe. There was only one small part of the action and that was towards the end when it came to stopping the end of the world with the clock.

It felt like Directer Roth was trying to pack so much into the movie that it wasn’t good and a tad boring on the side as well. I understand that it’s supposed to be a child and family movie but If I’m feeling as if I’m going to fall asleep during the movie. Not to mention, there were two kids in the same movie along with us and about twenty movies into the movie, they were telling the mom that they were bored of the movie.

  1. I thought this looked really strange from the trailer. It seemed quite dark for a children’s film. Weird that there wasn’t much action though because that was the main part of the trailer!

  2. That’s disappointing to hear it’s not as action packed as the trailer suggests. I was looking forward to seeing it but might give it a miss, and wait for the dvd.
